Work + Faith Matters Blog
Perspectives on faith, leadership, culture, and the challenges facing today's Christian professionals.
Mining for Treasure
“Though good advice lies deep within the heart, a person with understanding will draw it out” (Proverbs 20:5). Sometimes the treasure of good counsel needs to be mined.
Is it Time to Plant?
“Those too lazy to plow in the right season will have no food at the harvest” (Proverbs 20:4). The best time to plant was 20 years ago; the second best time is today.
Foolish Quarreling
“Avoiding a fight is a mark of honor; only fools insist on quarreling” (Proverbs 20:3). Fight for principles and life, not for preferences.
Learning and Testing
“If you stop listening to instruction, my child, you will turn your back on knowledge” (Proverbs 19:27). Familiarity can quietly become a reason to stop paying attention.
What is in Your Hand?
“Lazy people take food in their hand but don’t even lift it to their mouth” (Proverbs 19:24). Sometimes what’s missing isn’t opportunity, but the will to use what’s already in your hands.
A Question of Fear
“Fear of the Lord leads to life, bringing security and protection from harm” (Proverbs 19:23). Not all fear is equal: one kind paralyzes, the other sets you free.
Law of Attraction
“Loyalty makes a person attractive. It is better to be poor than dishonest” (Proverbs 19:22). True attractiveness isn’t about image; it’s about integrity.
Decision Pressure
“You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail” (Proverbs 19:21). His ability to succeed is greater than your ability to fail.
Are There Things God Cannot Do?
“Get all the advice and instruction you can, so you will be wise the rest of your life” (Proverbs 19:20). God cannot lie, change, or learn — not from limitation, but because it’s against His nature.
Beneficial Consequences
“Hot-tempered people must pay the penalty. If you rescue them once, you will have to do it again” (Proverbs 19:19). Sometimes the best thing we can do isn’t prevent the consequence, but let it teach.
Helping the Poor
“If you help the poor, you are lending to the Lord — and he will repay you!” (Proverbs 19:17). Generosity isn’t a transaction; it’s a demonstration of God’s love for others.
The Comfort Illusion
“Lazy people sleep soundly, but idleness leaves them hungry” (Proverbs 19:15). We weren’t saved to be comfortable — we were saved to be holy, set apart.
An Anger Management Tool
“Sensible people control their temper; they earn respect by overlooking wrongs” (Proverbs 19:11). Anger often comes from unmet expectations — so start by managing those, not other people.
Don't Be Hasty
“Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good; haste makes mistakes” (Proverbs 19:2). There’s a difference between quick decisions and hasty ones.
A Different Kind of Poverty
“Better to be poor and honest than to be dishonest and a fool” (Proverbs 19:1). The real question isn’t about poverty — it’s about honesty.
Who Are You Becoming?
“There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24). We tend to become like the company we keep — so choose wisely.
Words Can Satisfy
“Wise words satisfy like a good meal; the right words bring satisfaction” (Proverbs 18:20). Satisfaction often comes not just through food, but through the company of others.
Have you ever lost a friend?
“An offended friend is harder to win back than a fortified city” (Proverbs 18:19). Some relationships are shaken and never quite the same — handle offenses with care.
What Will Listening Do For You?
“Intelligent people are always ready to learn. Their ears are open for knowledge” (Proverbs 18:15). Intelligence isn’t just known — it’s demonstrated through the application of knowledge.
Purpose Against Pain
“The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear a crushed spirit?” (Proverbs 18:14). Purpose doesn’t erase the pain, but it helps you endure it.
